The Hermelin is modeled after a Type XVIIC WWI u-boat.  It was an experimental design based on a Walter engine closed cycle turbine motor that used hydrogen peroxide as fuel.  Although this design did not end up as viable, many aspects of it was used for the technologically advanced Type XXI that were produced near the end of the war.

The submarine is based off of a pump ballast system and is usually configured as a positive buoyancy boat.  However, you can set it up as a negative buoyancy boat but that is risky as it is up to you to be able to drive the boat to the surface using the main drive motor and dive planes.  Also built into the design is many safety systems, including a lost signal and internal water sensor that will activate the ballast pump if necessary.  The WTC also features an air valve that is used to over pressurize the dry hull.  This over pressurized air can be used to drain the water out of the ballast tank in an emergency.

The kit includes all the hardware you need to build the boat, including an electronic speed controller, an electronic switch for the included ballast pump, and the main battery.  Even the lead ballast is supplied.  The kit usually comes with the battery charger as well but since it is designed for 220 volts, it will not work in the USA so it is not included.  About the only thing you need to supply is the radio, glue and solder.
